Alberto Manguel

Alberto Manguel was born in Buenos Aires, and worked in publishing in Italy, France, England and Tahiti, before arriving in Canada in the early1980s. Manguel began his distinguished career with the first edition of The Dictionary of Imaginary Places (1980) co-authored with Gianni Guadalupi. A History of Reading was published in 1998, and was awarded France's prestigious Prix Medici Award. Moving thematically through different eras and places, A History of Reading presents a wide-ranging exploration of the topic of reading. His most recent book, Reading Pictures (2000) examines various paintings, photographs, sculptures and monuments, and explores the ways in which they attempt to tell a story. Today Manguel is recognized as an accomplished editor, translator, anthologist, essayist and novelist.
